Friends of the Locust Fork Day at the River

Saturday, June 18th, 2016 at 8am - 2pm

Location: Kings Bend

This event is in the past.

Make plans to join the BCC at Day at the River, June 18, an event run by Friends of the Locust Fork.  Day at the River introduces kids from Blount County and surrounding areas to the river.  Our job is to provide just a bit of paddling education, and then get the kids out on the water in boats.  We use the pool on the Locust Fork at Kings Bend, below the race course.  The kids get to paddle a bit, until we start flipping them upside down and other general tomfoolery.

It's a great event:  much fun and it is a great way to give back to the community at one of our favorite rivers.  FLFR puts on a nice event, lunch is included and it's a great way to spend a summer day messing around in a river.

We need volunteers, boats, PFD's (especially kid sizes).  No experience required.  We teach a bit, but mostly let the kids have fun and try to keep them from getting hurt.  The BCC has been doing Day at the River since it started about 15 years ago, and we are always the most popular part of the overall event.  We'll have an impact on over 200 kids over the course of the day.

Hope to see lots of people there.

8am - 2pm (or thereabouts), Kings Bend on the Locust Fork.  Bring paddling clothes/shoes, and boats, PFD's, etc.  We need ww kayaks, rec kayaks, tandem canoes, sit-on-tops, the works.  Contact Shep for more information.  bshep@uab.edu
